At an unspecified hour, a rogue electrical surge bypassed every
surge protector (we had none) and introduced itself — uninvited — to the server's
motherboard. The motherboard, a gentle soul, did not survive the encounter.
The UPS was on holiday. The power strip was from 2009.
Investigation is ongoing, but leading theories include:
bad luck, worse planning, and
hubris.
